Overview: The 2011 Toyota Matrix is fuel-efficient and utilitarian, a great fit for commuters looking to minimize fuel costs. The Matrix has some of the highest fuel economy ratings in its class, good cargo space, a comfortable interior and Smart Stop Technology. With a base model and a manual transmission, you can get 26/32 mpg city/highway. The Matrix also has a maximum cargo capacity of 49.4 cubic feet, which is plenty of space for hauling groceries or luggage. If you check out the Matrix’s interior, you should be satisfied with driver and passenger seating. The back seat is roomy, and there’s a standard tilt and telescopic steering wheel. Finally, Toyota added Smart Stop Technology, a system that reduces engine power when the brake pedal and accelerator are pressed at the same time, to the Matrix’s standard features list.
Exterior: Toyota redesigned the Matrix in 2009, so there are few changes to the exterior for the 2011 model year. However, if you get the sportier S model, you will get 17 inch wheels, front and rear underbody spoilers, a color-keyed rear spoiler and an S badge.
Interior: Standard tilt and telescopic steering wheel makes it easy to find a good driving position. The rear seats are comfortable. Three children should fit comfortably, but limit adult passengers to two. The 2011 Matrix comes with telescopic steering wheel with audio mounted controls and Bluetooth capability, remote keyless entry, power windows and doors, an auxiliary audio jack and a 12 volt power outlet. The base model has a hook up for your iPod and XM Satellite Radio. The Matrix has a good amount of cargo space – 49.9 with the rear seats folded and 19.8 with the rear seats in use.
Performance: Test drivers report that the sporty S trim of the 2011 Toyota Matrix is a much better performer than the base mode. The base model, however, has some of the highest fuel economy ratings in the class and is a good option if you just need an efficient daily commuter and don’t mind sacrificing performance. The Matrix also has another good thing going for it: optional all-wheel drive. The 2011 Toyota Matrix wasn’t built for enthusiasts, but has enough power for daily driving. The base model has a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. You can upgrade to the sportier S model. It has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.
Safety: Neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the federal government has tested the 2011 Toyota Matrix extensively. The federal government has only provided rollover scores for the Matrix, and gives it four out of five stars. Scores for the 2010 model are available, but keep in mind that the government’s scoring criteria has changed, so these scores do not apply to the 2011 model and only give you an idea of what the 2011 crash test scores could be. The 2010 Matrix has outstanding safety scores. It receives a five star rating, the highest possible, for front driver, front passenger and side driver safety. It also receives four out of five starts in two- and four-wheel drive rollover tests and side passenger safety. The IIHS has not tested the 2011 model, but scores for the 2010 are available. The Matrix receives the top score of “Good” in front offset and side impact crash tests and the second highest score of “Acceptable” for rear crash protection. There are no roof strength tests available.
The 2011 Matrix comes standard with Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-Lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology, a new feature for 2011 that decreases engine power when the brake and accelerator pedals are pressed simultaneously. The Matrix also has driver and front passenger front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags.

The 2011 Toyota Matrix has received very good reviews from the auto press. Here are some excerpts that our Greater Dayton Toyota Matrix shoppers would find interesting:
"for those who like the idea of a car that does a little bit of everything well (without looking weird while doing it), the Toyota Matrix is an excellent choice." – Edmunds
"Young buyers that are Matrix's target audience might consider the odd interior shapes hip and the low-budget cabin decor a non-issue. At the same time, they're also apt to find this small wagon easy to drive and roomy enough for friends and belongings. A front-drive S model with no options is the best choice in this lineup." – Consumer Guide
